Canalway Partners is launching a new logo for Canal Basin Park. The new brand marks the coming renewal of the historic space as the City of Cleveland moves forward plans for the park’s full development.
Inspired by Cleveland’s origin story, the Canal Basin Park logo marks the convergence of river, canal, rail, and city, with a rising sun symbolizing beginnings and renewal. Anchored by the iconic Veteran’s Memorial Bridge and flowing landscape lines, the logo expresses connection, movement, and a dynamic riverfront park that is distinctly Cleveland. The logo and branding was completed by Guide Studio.
“Cleveland’s origin story begins in Canal Basin Park. The Ohio & Erie Canal was the engine that fueled commercial growth in Ohio, and made Cleveland an essential nexus for a growing nation,” said Mera Cardenas, Executive Director at Canalway Partners. “We hope this logo gets people excited about the future of the park and interested in its meaningful history.”
In support of the City of Cleveland, Canalway Partners is acting as a partner in programming, advocacy, and fundraising for Canal Basin Park, as it did for the completion of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail in Cuyahoga County.
The logo comes as Canalway Partners starts a public effort to raise the first $1 Million for Canal Basin Park in honor of Tim Donovan, Canalway Partners’ founding executive director. The estate of Tim Donovan recently gifted $275,000 to the future of Canal Basin Park. Toward that $1 million goal, Canalway Partners has raised $725,000 for the first phases of construction at Canal Basin Park, including the gift from the Tim Donovan estate and $450,000 from Cuyahoga County’s federal American Rescue Plan Act funds.
Created by Merritt Chase on behalf of the City of Cleveland in 2024, the design plans for Canal Basin Park enhance the site by leveraging its historic features and its central riverfront location. The schematic designs were approved unanimously by the City of Cleveland Planning Commission in January of 2025. Through immersive riverfront experiences, open green spaces, and embedded history, the park will become a dynamic destination that strengthens community connections and inspires a renewed sense of identity for residents, visitors, and adventurers at the region’s northern gateway.
