Canalway, the host of the annual Cleveland History Days honoring Cleveland's history, announces the first-ever Cleveland Buried History Days, a four-day series of events highlighting five of Cleveland’s historic cemeteries.
Similar to the summer version of Cleveland History Days, this new program offers opportunities for guests to engage with historic spaces and learn more about the city's unique heritage. Events are designed to enlighten, not frighten, and include ways to learn more about the lives (and deaths) of Clevelanders dating back to the early 1800s through tours, hikes, presentations and even trick-or-treating in a cemetery. Tour guides and historians will breathe life into some of the lesser known stories of Cleveland’s past.
Participating cemeteries include Woodland Cemetery, Riverside Cemetery, Lake View Cemetery, Monroe Street Cemetery, and Erie Street Cemetery through Take a Hike tours.
“Historic cemeteries were our first parks and greenspaces and hold beautiful art and architecture. They also afford us the chance to learn more about the lives and death of past Clevelanders. We are pleased to partner with five locations for this very first Buried History Days so those stories can be explored as well as programing about cemetery preservation and symbolism,” said Mera Cardenas, executive director of Canalway.
Presentations by Krista Horrocks of the State Historic Preservation Office, and the Ohio History Connection’s resident cemetery expert, will educate participants on the symbolism of gravestones and help them become better cemetery visitors.
Tickets prices vary from $20 to no cost. Most events require registration.
