Celebrate the Opening of Canal Basin Trailhead

Commemorate the opening of the new Canal Basin Trailhead at the future site of Canal Basin Park with a weekend of events September 9 – 11!

In addition to the trailhead opening, the completion of this new green space in downtown Cleveland marks the completion of the Towpath Trail in Cuyahoga County.

Friday, September 9

Towpath Strolls | 5 to 8 pm

Enjoy free bike rentals and free frozen treats at Canal Basin Trailhead. Jump on a bike and explore the Towpath Trail.

Saturday, September 10

Take a Hike | 10 am

Learn the history of Canal Basin and Cleveland’s first harbor at this in-person tour. You’ll meet historic characters Mrs. Alfred Kelley and Carl Stokes along the way.

Canal Basin Celebration | 9 am to 2 pm

Join Downtown Cleveland Alliance and Canalway Partners at Canal Basin Park as we celebrate the newly completed Canal Basin Trailhead. Saturday activities include barbershop quartet Straight from the Heart, a tour of Canal Basin from our partner Take a Hike, lawn games, and Paint in the Park, a featured activity where you can pick a design and enjoy the views while painting with your friends.

Pre-registered tickets for Paint in the Park are $20. Day-of tickets are $30. All materials are supplied. Only 40 tickets are available.

Trikeable Treats will be on-site selling ice cream.

Sunday, September 11

CANCELLED: Sunday Social Bike Ride

Starting at Canal Basin Trailhead, explore the newest sections of the Towpath Trail with cycling leaders for a 10 mile ride to Cleveland Cliffs Steel Yard Heritage Center and back.


Weekend events along the Towpath Trail

Celebrate the completion of Cuyahoga County’s Towpath Trail with these Cleveland Metroparks’ events on and along the Towpath Trail outside of downtown Cleveland.

Saturday, September 10

Towpath Trail Cart Tour | 2:20 pm

Historical Interpreter Doug Kusak drives the 7-passenger cart while trying not to drive you crazy as he drives home the importance of trails, science, history, and interagency cooperation in the drive for reconnecting Cleveland.

Harvest Moon Hike | 8:30 to 10 pm

Historian Judy MacKeigan leads a full moon hike along the canal and the Lower Forty loop. Judy will share moon lore and some canal history and wind up the evening with s’mores around the campfire.

Sunday, September 11

Sunday Stroll along the Towpath | 3 to 4:30 pm

Join Naturalist Carly Martin for an easy-paced walk along the Towpath. Towering wildflowers, flittering butterflies and fishing birds will likely decorate our afternoon.
