Canal Basin Park
Canal Basin Park
You can enjoy Canal Basin Park in downtown Cleveland today.
As the greenspace awaits construction, it serves as a location for community engagement. Today, you can visit the park to enjoy its many lawns, including Settlers Landing directly on the river, its trail connections, and the existing dog park.
The park is home to community events such as The Towpath Marathon, the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival, and more. Seasonally, Take a Hike hosts tours of Canal Basin Park highlighting its history and future.
The park is also the northern terminus of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, a multi-use recreational trail that mostly follows the historic route of the canal and connects Cleveland to the Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation and Cuyahoga Valley National Park before continuing south into Stark, Summit and Tuscarawas Counties. Additionally, the trail has connections to many bike and hike trails including the Centennial Trail to Lake Erie and the Red Line Greenway.
From Canal Basin Park, Cuyahoga Valley National Park is approximately 12 miles south on the Towpath Trail.
There is a paid public parking lot and water fountain at this trailhead. There are currently not public restrooms in Canal Basin Park.

The most recent improvement at Canal Basin Park is the mural under the RTA Viaduct. The new Towpath Trail mural by Kelle Schwab welcomes guests to the park, and illustrates the early days and importance of the Ohio & Erie canal and its impact on the modern landscape and trail.
